Assistant Superintendent returns in a short time, bringing with him a man named John Madison, recognized as the man who, the preceding day, had applied to enter the police. The Assistant Superintendent reported that he found "Madison handcuffed and fastened to a gun, and on examining him, he bore marks of flogging on his legs, his eyes were blackened, and several bruises on his body. In consequence, he requested the Chief Mate to deliver the man to him, and the request was, without demur, complied with. "Madison" was directed to apply to the Police Magistrate the following day for a summons against the person who assaulted him, and bail was taken that he should be forthcoming to do so.
On the 20th inst., Madison applied to the Sitting Magistrate, Mr. Mitchell, who granted a summons against the Master of the "Reindeer", for assault.
On the 23rd inst., the case was gone into before the Honorable the Chief Magistrate and I.C. Leslie, Esquire, J.P., the complainant was represented by M. Stace, Attorney; the circumstances already stated; the subsequent escape of the defendant is shown in report enclosed herewith.
I was receiving from the Notary of the Police Court the report of the escape, and its attendant particulars, immediately proceeded on board the United States Steam Frigate "Princeton", expecting to find United States Consul and the defendant on board.
